Happy 2011

Hello all; It has been a long, long time since I have posted anything here. I know, I have made promises in the past, to be more diligent with updates, and will not make any more promises. However, I will try to let my presence be known a bit more often on this blog. Sandra is in remarkably good health considering her condition. She is still in good spirits, although, of course, she wants her life back. She has finally made it to the "active transplant list". Go figure, after 5 years, she has moved up, to anywhere from one to five years waiting time. A couple of months ago, she met with the transplant team at the hospital, and later this month we are meeting with the surgeon. She is trying to keep busy while waiting. Tomorrow, she will start working for the annual fund raising drive for the Kidney Foundation, which she has done every year since she was diagnosed. Last summer was very eventful for us. Ever since Sandra was diagnosed, I have expressed that, if I had the money, I would go anywhere to purchase a kidney for her. Last summer we were approached about participating in a documentary exploring the "organ market in India". The documentary shows both sides of this controversial issue. It was a life changing experience for us. I am so grateful for this opportunity, and humbled. We visited the slums, where it seemed like most women had a huge scar from the removal of their kidney. The film premiered at the IDFA in Amsterdam, and next it will be at the film festival in Vancouver, BC, Canada. Right now I can only share with you, the trailer, and a bit of the history of the film. Hopefully you will get an idea of what it is about. Just follow the link: http://www.themarketfilm.com/trailer.html I wish you all the best for 2011. Cheers, Christina

Hello,

I have just discovered your blog and decided to follow it. I had my kidney transplant in the UK, July '10 so I know a little, tiny bit of what your daughter may be going through.

I just want to offer you my hope for a better future and I will be reading your blog continually,

Much love, Jen

A Film by Rama Rau I'd watched the trailer and found it very capitivating. A film that should by watched by all sitting members of the Legislative Assembly of B.C. and assemblies across Canada for that matter.

Hi Jen; thank you for visiting my blog. I am very interested in your story, and would like to know how you are doing now...do you have any side effects from the anti-rejection drugs,is your new kidney functioning as it should, or have there been any signs of rejection? I wish you all the best, and that you are now able to live life the way you choose, and to its fullest.

Richard, I agree, our politicians should be made aware of the ethical, and moral struggles facing all sides of this painful issue. Hopefully, this film will bring out awareness of the importance of signing up as an organ donor. As a mother, I also pray that an angel who sees this film will assist Sandra in getting her life back.
Thank you for visiting my blog. Christina

Christina,
I just found this blog. I am walking the same road, sadly. My 11 year old daughter was just diagnosed with renal failure. We are having a PD catheter "installed" in mid-August. I am appalled by how much pain you daughter had post-operatively. I was led to believe that it's fairly straightforward with a rapid recovery. But then, I've discovered that a lot of these docs are a bit cavalier about the suffering aspect of all of this.

Hi DeeDee;
Thank you for visiting my blog. My heart goes out to you, and your daughter. At least, Sandra avoided having to go through this in her childhood, in spite of the late detection of her Reflux. Just to put your mind at ease, it seems as though Sandra's post-operative problems were an exception, rather than the rule. She has not had any major problems since...not even one bout with peritonitis, or other complications. Both Sandra and I highly recommend the PD option. It is overwhelming in the beginning, but it gets better, as hard as it is to imagine.
I wish you the best, and please keep us posted.
Hugs, Christina

I hope all is well and that the transplant has gone ahead as planned. I wanted to point you to my friend's toy creation charged with raising awareness for the importance of organ donation. http://www.foox-u.com/vinyl/25-boxes-1-tray.html the proceeds go to Donate For Life and Gift of Life Michigan - both relating to organ donation and changing the law to opt in rather than opt out as is currently the system. Hope you enjoy life and best wishes. xoxo Samantha.

Hi Christina,

I saw "The Market" on TVO tonight and was moved by Sandra's story, as well as the bravery shown by all three of you in sharing it. I am looking forward to an update on Sandra's condition, and wish your family all the best.
